First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles, best known as FAME, is celebrating 150 years of ministry, mission, and message. The year-long celebration will continue through May 2023 and include various events and activities to commemorate the oldest Black Church established in the city.
“We invite the community to join us as we honor our heritage and celebrate the blessings bestowed upon us here at FAME,” said Pastor “J.” Edgar Boyd, senior minister. “Our motto is first to serve, and we are proud to continue Biddy Mason’s vision and legacy as we have for the past 150 years.”
FAME’s history reaches back to 1856 when it was founded by Bridgett “Biddy” Mason, a former slave, who received the vision from God to establish a church that would minister to the mind, body and soul of all who would join that small band of believers. The vision, 150 years ago, has grown to what is now a congregation with several dozen ministries that reach people throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
The celebration will include the “Our Heritage in Sacred Music” concert, on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. at First AME Church, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd.
The event will feature the FAME Freedom Mass Choir, Gospel Artists and Soloists. KJLH Radio Personality, Aundrae Russell, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, along with actress Jackie Houston-McNeal.
On Friday, Dec. 2, the church will host the 10th Annual FAME College Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament and Banquet at Lakewood Golf Course. Tickets for both can be purchased at https://www.famechurchla.org/eventnews/upcoming-events/.
