Nadel Architects (Nadel) announced that construction is underway on Jordan Downs Plaza, a $24 million mixed-use development in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California. Designed for Primestor Development, Inc., the overall $5 billion, 115,000-square-foot mixed-use development will serve as a retail and dining hub, helping bring together more than 34,000 Watts residents with a “community living room” gathering style plaza and access to a variety of amenities in a pedestrian-friendly environment. The development is located at Alameda Street and Century Boulevard.

“Working in a deeply collaborative manner with Primestor, the design goal is to create a retail destination that will not only express the qualities distinctive to the current Watts community, but one that also speaks to the ideals and aspirations of the evolving population of South Central,” said Greg Lyon, principal and design director at Nadel. “Jordan Downs heralds in the new generation of Lifestyle centers, with an emphasis on authenticity, innovative retailer concepts, and a true integration of community and design.”

This development comes at a ripe time with the city’s continued growth in this previously underserved community, including the redevelopment of the public housing efforts being led by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in coordination with the Housing Authority of the city of Los Angeles and the nonprofit BRIDGE.

With an anticipated completion date of summer 2019, Jordan Downs Plaza sits on 10 acres and will be one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the United States. As part of the revitalization project, the open-air shopping and dining destination will include a full-service supermarket, financial institutions, a fitness center, sit-down restaurants, cafes and a variety of local and national retailers.
