The Palmdale City Library, 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., kicks off its Musicals Movie Festival Monday, Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. with 1978’s “Grease” (rated PG). Admission and popcorn are free and the event is open to all ages.

Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, Grease introduces two 1950s teens: bad-boy Danny and good-girl Sandy. The pair thought their summer romance was over with Sandy heading home to Australia, but, a change in plans instead lands her at Danny’s high school. Can their romance be rekindled and survive high school cliques?

The Musicals Movie Festival will continue with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (rated G) on Tuesday, Aug. 21, The Greatest Showman (rated PG) on Wednesday, Aug. 22, and Mary Poppins (rated G) on Thursday, Aug. 23.

Eccentric and reclusive candy maker Willy Wonka (played by Gene Wilder) announces a contest: 5 golden tickets hidden in his candy bars will grant access to his mysterious factory and a chance at a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. A colorful mix of children finds the tickets, setting the stage for a fantastic adventure full of wonder and surprises.

Inspired by the history of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, this Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe-winning film tells the story of the circus’s start as well as the tension between creating something extraordinary and being a husband and father. Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, and Zendaya give exuberant and entertaining performances that are sure to delight.

Starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Walt Disney’s 1964 Academy Award-winning film tells the tale of a wealthy, uptight London family whose new nanny shakes up the family’s routine and stuffiness. Mary’s magical ways (an arrival by umbrella and a seemingly bottomless carpet bag), gentle disposition, and variety of friends, including singing and dancing Bert, open a new perspective for the children. Songs such as “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Jolly Holiday” are cheerful tunes sure to bring a smile and linger even after Mary’s story comes to a conclusion.

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Palmdale City Library.
