Paul Robeson Center provides fresh produce, nutrition tips

The Paul Robeson Community Wellness Center, 6569 S. Vermont Ave., will host a grand opening Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The The Paul Robeson Community Wellness Center houses The Village Market Place Food Hub including, South LA’s first “Beyond Organic” produce market, the Soulful Café a commercial kitchen and incubator and an onsite urban farm. This LEED certified building will offer nutrition and wellness workshops, events highlighting local artists and environmental stewardship activities and training.

The creation of the Paul Robeson Center is the latest effort by Community Services Unlimited (CSU), a local non-profit, to create a sustainable food system that brings good food, educational programs and jobs to the South LA community. The Center’s creation has been supported by individuals and families in and around South LA, by the pro bono work of construction professionals and attorneys, by the financial support of the Whole Cities, Leonardo DiCaprio, W.K. Kellogg, Designing Futures and Metabolic Studios Annenberg Foundations, and US Green Build LA Chapter, City National Bank, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Fresh Works and with loans from LIFT Economy and Self Help Credit Union.

The grand opening will honor of entertainer and social activist Paul Robeson and the Black Panther Party who each fought to create sustainable, equitable and healthful communities. The event will  feature local speakers, artists and chefs, children’s activities and guided tours of the center by CSU’s youth interns showcasing the multiple planned community activities and the history and connections to Paul Robeson.
