Assembly Concurrent Resolution 138 names a section of Highway 14 in Lancaster after the late state Senator Sharon Runner, and a section of Highway 138 in Palmdale after mayor and former Assemblyman Larry Chimbole. The measure was brought forward by Assemblymembers Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale) and Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) who represent parts of the senate district formerly held by Runner.
“I am proud to have learned from Sharon Runner’s leadership and consider her as a close friend,” Lackey said. “Larry Chimbole was instrumental in making the Antelope Valley what it is today. Naming these sections of highway in honor of these great leaders will serve as a small token of their legacy for positive change in our community.”
Wilk released a statement: “I feel blessed to have known Sharon as both a mentor and friend,” he said. “Her love of California and compassion toward others is what made her an exceptional and well-respected leader. Sharon was truly selfless and always put others above herself. There was no better wife, mother, grandmother, friend or mentor. Sharon’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched.”
Also speaking on behalf of Runner was Senate Republican Leader Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield).
“Sharon Runner was a true public servant who left a lasting legacy,” Fuller said. “She loved the High Desert and worked tirelessly to ensure it remained a great place to live and raise a family. I was honored to call Sharon a close friend prior to us serving together in the California Legislature. She was a political trailblazer who was an inspiration to women across our state.”
The next step of the highway naming process requires working with CalTrans to produce the signs and schedule the ceremonies. The date and time to formally dedicate the spans of highway were being determined at press time.
