Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has installed 14 new charging stations for electric vehicles.

The installation of these new charging stations increases the total number of slots at Los Angeles World Airport’s (LAWA) three airports to 66. In addition to the 14 in Lot C at LAX, there are 20 stations in Parking Structure 1, and 18 in Parking Structure 6 of the Central Terminal Area.

While the cost of charging is free, electric vehicle owners have had to pay the posted parking rate to charge their gas-free automobiles since Mar. 1 of 2013. The parking fees range from $2 per 30 minutes to sometimes as high as $30 for 24 hour parking (depending on the location).

These 14 charging stations were provided by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as part of its “Charge Up LA!” program that seeks to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructures while providing rebate assistance to qualifying customers for home, workplace, and public charging.

Previously, charging stations were limited for use to only a few different vehicle models. The new stations have universal applications that allow them to be used by all electric vehicles.
