At a recent city council meeting, the Santa Clarita City Council approved three grant awards designed to benefit Santa Clarita’s Community Services and Arts programs.  The approved awards included monies up to $72,000 for community services grants, $45,000 for arts grants and a separate art grant of up to $3,000 awarded to the Canyon Theatre Guild.

For approximately 23 years, Santa Clarita has provided annual funding to city-based community organizations through the grant program.  Each year, a grant committee is assembled to determine funding categories, review and rate applications, and make final funding recommendations for community service and arts projects throughout Santa Clarita.

The committee received 30 applications, with grant requests totaling $146,350.  The committee chose to award funds to 15 of those applicants, including Help the Children, Child and Family Center, Single Mother’s Outreach, Family Promise of SCV, Triumph Foundation, Yes I Can, LARC Ranch, Bridge to Home, A Light of Hope, Special Olympics, Avenues of Supportive Living, SCV Educational Foundation, Gibbon Conservation Center, Domestic Violence Center and Carousel Ranch.

The grant committee also selected seven out of 11 applicants to receive arts grants funding, including SCVTV, SC Master Chorale, Repertory East Playhouse, Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival, Santa Clarita Ballet Company and ESCAPE Theatre.

This year’s Grant Committee was comprised of Mayor Laurene Weste, Councilmember Bob Kellar; Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Chair Dianna Boone; Arts Commission Chair Susan Shapiro and city staff from the Finance division, City Manager’s office and Administrative Services department.
