Sobriety checkpoints by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster, Carson and Norwalk Saturday night through early Monday screened thousands of motorists and yielded 10 DUI-related arrests, a sheriff’s captain said.
A sobriety checkpoint by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster netted six arrests of people driving illegally, said Capt. Mike Parker of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.
A total of 865 vehicles passed through the checkpoint on eastbound Avenue I at Dale Avenue.
Two people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, one was arrested for allowing an unlicensed person to drive their vehicle and three were arrested for misdemeanor traffic warrants, he said.
Another 14 people were arrested for unlicensed driving and four were arrested for suspended or revoked licenses, Parker said.
Nearly 1,800 vehicles drove through a DUI checkpoint in Carson and two people suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana were arrested, as well as five people with suspended or revoked licenses and seven unlicensed drivers, the captain said.
Nearly 1,100 vehicles passed through a checkpoint in Norwalk, where deputies arrested two people suspected of illegal possession of narcotics and arrested nine unlicensed drivers and seven with suspended or revoked licenses, Parker said.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent,” he said.
