The city of Palmdale presents “How to Train Your Dragon” at “Family Movie Nights” this Friday, Aug. 9 at the Palmdale Amphitheater, 2723 Rancho Vista Blvd.

Tickets are $2, with kids 12 and under admitted free. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and the movie will start at dusk. Families will also be allowed to bring a picnic dinner and non-alcoholic beverages to Family Movie Nights.

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, this action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Voice-overs are provided by Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. “How to Train Your Dragon” is rated PG.

“The Avengers” is the final movie of the summer and screens on Friday, Aug. 16.

“At each movie, we’ll host a ‘Care With Cans’ Food Drive,” said Recreation Supervisor Annie Pagliaro. “For each canned food item you donate, you’ll receive a raffle ticket for great prizes. The Food Drive will benefit the South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES).”

Waste Management will also collect gently-used clothing at “Family Movie Nights” to benefit SAVES.

Sponsors of Family Movie Nights are the Antelope Valley Mall, High Desert Medical Group, Time Warner Cable Channel 3 News, Valleywide Dental and Waste Management.
