A man and his daughter were nearly electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal utility power in Inglewood, police said today.

The incident happened Friday near 10024 S. Hawthorne Blvd., William Charles of the Inglewood Police Department said.

Officers responded to the 4300 block of West 101st Street regarding an electrical transformer that was producing sparks and upon arrival noticed a fire associated with the transformer, Charles said.

The officers found the two injured people standing outside a truck with an attached fifth wheel trailer next to the burning pole.

“During the investigation, officers revealed the subject and his juvenile daughter were attempting to steal utility power,” Charles said in a statement. “Their ineffectual attempt resulted in disruption of normal performance to the transformer.”

Both sustained burns to their upper body and were taken to a hospital. They were each listed in critical condition and transferred to a local burn center.    Southern California Edison shut down the electricity in the area, and an investigation was continuing into the theft.
