Challengers Mark Dantzler succumbs to cancer

On May 24, Mark Dantzler, program director at Challengers Boys and Girls club, died of complications from lung cancer. He was the oldest son of the founder of Challengers, Lou Dantzler and also one of the organization’s original members.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Second Baptist Church, 925 S. Shamrock Ave., Monrovia. A private burial involving family members only follows.

Throughout Mark’s life he has been devoted to Challengers. He started off as a member at age six, was promoted to radio program coordinator in 1999, and ended his life as the program director.

Beyond Challengers Mark’s career included a stint in the military as a telecommunications operator after he graduated from John Marshall High in 1980. After four years in the United States Army, he dedicated the next five years of his life working for Los Angeles Unified School District, and the following eight as a customer service representative for Southern California Edison.
