Science of Sport, in partnership with the City of Inglewood, will host the first Inglewood STEM Fest on Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Edward Vincent Jr. Park. The free event is open to youth, Kindergarten through sixth grades.
Science of Sport will expose students to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through unique experiences that focus on several familiar sports. The event will also show participants real world applications of STEM that focus on kinesthetic learning, scientific methods and curriculum that align with California Math, Science and Physical Education standards.
“This inaugural event is designed to bring in Los Angeles-based sports organizations to provide an engaging day of STEM and sports to the Inglewood community,” said Ashley Dean, VP of Programs and Development for Science of Sport.
Activity stations will be set up throughout the event providing STEM lessons centered around breathwork & yoga, basketball, soccer, tennis, baseball, softball, football and track & field. The event will also feature a STEM presentation by Science of Sport and a panel discussion with industry professionals. STEM Fest will provide sponsors and brands the opportunity to engage with the community.
“The estimated 3.5+ Million STEM jobs that go unfilled due to a lack of exposure and opportunities only magnifies the importance of an already considerable shortage,” said Daren Heaton, executive director of Science of Sport. “By exposing students to the applicability of STEM to their everyday lives, our hope is to inspire them to pursue careers in the STEM workforce, and what better way to do this than through the lens of sports.”
“We’re excited to partner with the Science of Sport and eager to collaborate on this joint effort in the Spring,” said Teresa Estrada, recreation superintendent for the City of Inglewood Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. “Our goal is to excite local youth about STEM and open students’ eyes to the possibility of a career in a STEM profession.”
Community partners for the inaugural event so far include Angel City Football Club; Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation; Los Angeles Lakers; Los Angeles Rams; The Marvin Group; and USTA So Cal.
