The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bipartisan bill: the ‘Six Triple Eight’ Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021” (S.321), a bill introduced in the United States Senate. This is the Senate companion bill to H.R. 1012m introduced in the House.
This bill directs the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the president pro tempore of the Senate to arrange for the award of a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (commonly known as the ‘Six Triple Eight’) in recognition of their pioneering military service as the only African-American Women’s Army unit to serve overseas during World War II.
These soldiers have been formally recognized and awarded for their contributions to increasing morale by ensuring that no mail went undelivered to personnel stationed in the European theater of operations. The medal shall be given to the Smithsonian Institution and made available for display and research.
The bill passed by a vote of 422-0.
