The White House on Wednesday announced a new partnership seeking to increase vaccination rates by enlisting Black barbershops – one part of a major push that also includes free child care and extended pharmacy hours to facilitate inoculations, reports USNews.com.

The initiatives come a month before the Independence Day deadline at which President Joe Biden has said he wants 70 percent of American adults to have received at least one shot – a period the administration has referred to as a “month of action.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 percent of adults have had their first shot and more than 50 percent are fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, 12 states have partially vaccinated 70 percent of their adults, the White House says.

Biden said Wednesday that increasing vaccinations gives Americans a chance to return to normal.

The “Shots at the Shop” initiative is a partnership between the White House, Black Coalition Against COVID, SheaMoisture and the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity to team up with Black-owned barbershops across the U.S. Those participating barbershops will have educational materials on hand and will host on-site vaccination events to encourage their customers to get vaccinated.
