The City of Palmdale is embarking on a new community-led journey to make it safer to walk and bike near the Palmdale Regional Airport.
The idea behind re-imagining 1.4 miles of Avenue Q, between Sierra Highway and 20th Street East, would create a modern corridor and enhance pedestrian and bicycle activities for residents of all ages and abilities.
The Complete Streets Project would be paired with the city and the region’s investment in high-speed rail, Metro’s High Desert Corridor and airport improvements.
The Avenue Q Complete Streets Project five minute public survey, (https://sur-vey.typeform.com/to/EmTCzK6v) entitled What should we do with Avenue Q?, will be available until May 9th. It is available in English and Spanish
City planners would also like for the project to improve the comfort and safety of walking and biking, while keeping in mind the unique characteristics and challenges presented by high desert weather.
Complete Streets improvements will be unique to Palmdale but could include: sidewalks, bike lanes, priority bus lanes, comfortable and accessible public transportation stops, frequent and safe crossing opportunities, median islands, landscaping and shade, accessible pedestrian signals, curb extensions, narrower travel lanes and more.
Community engagement is extremely important. Project leaders are seeking input from residents and businesses on how they currently use the corridor and ways it can be improved.
The project is being funded with $250,000 that was awarded to Palmdale by the Southern California Association of Governments’ Sustainable Communities Program for Regional Corridors.
City leaders began data collection in Fall 2020 and the final report will be presented to Palmdale City Council in Fall 2021.
