America’s so called “racial reckoning” is being showcased in the first network newsmagazine of its kind that puts Black life in America front and center.  “Soul of a Nation” is currently airing on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC. Episodes can also be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.

The historic six-episode, documentary-style series, “Soul of a Nation,” will explore specific themes including spirituality, Black joy, activism in sports and the racial reckoning that erupted in America after George Floyd’s death.

The National Association of Black Journalists and ABC News partnered together to host a Q&A panel during a special premiere on March 2.

“Do you think America is ready for what we’re going to show them,” questioned Byron Pitts, an anchor of the ABC News program ‘Nightline’.

“For us, by us,” said Sunny Hostin, Co-host of the ‘The View’ on ABC. “We really get real… many people will see themselves in our conversations.”

ABC executives see the program as a way to bridge the past, present and future.

“We’re excited to expand enterprising Black storytelling and the celebration of Black culture beyond the month of February,” said Eric Johnson, who is the co-executive producer of Soul of a Nation.

“Viewers of all backgrounds, regardless of race, will be moved, educated and inspired by the broad range of stories and topics shared on this show.”

“It’s about coalition building and seizing a moment and seizing an opportunity,” said Marie Nelson, senior vice president of Integrated Content Strategy at ABC News, who was credited with the idea that birthed this program.

Meanwhile, a variety of well-known athletes and entertainers including Carmelo Anthony, Nick Cannon, Kim Coles, Tommy Davidson, Danny Glover, Renee Montgomery, Chris Paul and Saweetie will be amongst the many sharing their voices and experiences with America.

One of the most provocative portions of the program will be “in the kitchen” featuring conversations about current events hosted by Hostin.

“We want everyone to enjoy the mac and cheese that we’re bringing,” Johnson said.

The segment will ask celebrities like Sterling K. Brown, when was the moment they realized they were Black, eliciting emotional and thought provoking responses.

“We want this to be that 360 experience,” Nelson said, before explaining she’s excited to share the “Black joy” episode. “What’s affecting one of us, is affecting all of us,” Hostin said.
