Byron Allen continues to expand his media empire. It was recently announced that he is taking his online newspaper, The Grio, to a new level, launching it as a TV choice. TheGrio.TV network, similar to Bounce TV, will air as a free channel.

It will debut on Jan. 15 on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend.

In Atlanta for example, it will air on Channel 5.4 with its content aimed at African American audiences. The channel will also be available on digital streaming. According to a press release, The Grio TV is expected to reach 100 million U.S. households. It launches on MLK Day, Jan. 15 with a slogan, “Our Culture Forever.”

Allen gave notice to the world just how intent he is at building his own media empire when he bought the Weather Channel for a reported $300 million. Some of his other TV properties include Comedy TV, Recipe TV and My Destination TV.

“The Grio – which means ‘storyteller’ in Africa – is the first platform to offer an online digital news destination, a free streaming app providing local news, weather, sports, traffic and entertainment content geofenced to the user’s zip code, and an over-the-air broadcast television network,” said Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Allen Media Group. “The Grio.TV is especially important to me as it will both serve and uplift all viewers. The Grio.TV is the first and only 100 percent African American-owned and targeted broadcast television network and free digital platform – making us truly authentic, without being filtered or controlled by others outside of the community.”
