Ross Johnson celebrates 100th birthday

Ross Johnson was born Sept. 2, 1920 in Mount Enterprise, Texas. A birthday parade will pass by his View Heights home on Wednesday to celebrate his 100-year milestone.

Johnson, also known as “Doc,” left home at 12 to take on odd jobs and became known as a “Jack of all trades.” He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Knox Kentucky. Later, Johnson married his wife, Mae, in 1944 and moved to California, where he purchased his first home in Vermont Square. They raised their six children in their second, View Heights home.

After working for the LA Unified School District as a truck driver for 15 years, Johnson retired in the 1980s. He and his family have been members of Saint Johns United Methodist Church; Bethel AME Church; and Grace United Methodist Church.
