State program grants millions to prepare for the ‘big one’

California’s Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) program provides grants up to $3,000 for homeowners in high-risk areas to lessen the potential for damage during an earthquake with a seismic retrofit.

In 2020, the EBB program covers homes in 355 ZIP codes across California. Registration for the 2020 EBB grant program opened Feb. 19. Visit www.EarthquakeBraceBolt.com to determine your eligibility.

In California, it’s not a question of “if” the next big earthquake will hit – it’s a question of “when.” There are more than 1.2 million houses in California built before 1980 in high-hazard areas that are vulnerable to collapse or destruction by sliding off the foundation during a strong earthquake. Seismic retrofits can help reduce damage to a house in the event of a destructive earthquake.

The EBB program provides grant funding to eligible homeowners to help offset the cost of a seismic retrofit. Seismic retrofits must be completed by trained contractors to strengthen the house by bracing any existing walls in the crawl space with plywood and bolting it to its foundation.

EBB is part of the California Residential Mitigation Program administered by the California Earthquake Authority and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. To learn more, visit www.EarthquakeBraceBolt.com.
