Earlier this month, the city of Lancaster joined forces with residents for IMPACT   Community Day. Community Day was a collaborative event which brought together more than 300 high school and college students, as well as more than 80 residents and community volunteers, to improve and beautify the neighborhood surrounding Mariposa Elementary School.

“Community Day was a labor of love, as these committed residents contributed their time and energy to enhance our city, working jointly with our staff,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “Such events not only refresh the physical appearance of our neighborhoods, but more importantly build lasting bonds among residents and encourage ownership and pride in our community, resulting in a lasting impact on our city.”

The city of Lancaster’s IMPACT Initiative was developed to support neighborhood efforts and to enhance the visual appearance of the community—key priorities of the mayor and city council, as well as city administration.

Through this initiative and its subsequent program, IMPACT 2020, local youth work closely with city staff to plan, create, contribute, and support various IMPACT improvement projects. As part of the IMPACT Initiative, on Community Day, local students and residents worked together to help mow lawns, cut down overgrown trees, and pick up large debris.

“Lancaster is filled with dedicated individuals who are passionate about giving back to their community,” concluded Council Member Ken Mann. “City staff developed an outlet, and our community responded by coming out and assisting with these projects. Thank you to all those who volunteered as part of Community Day.”

The event concluded with a community barbecue, which encouraged neighbors to meet one another and celebrated residents’ united efforts to enhance the Lancaster community.
