A day after a teenager shot five classmates—two fatally—at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, a 15-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly bringing a handgun to Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, although investigators don’t believe he had plans to harm anyone.
The boy, who said he brought the gun to the school at 44900 N. Division St. for protection, was arrested and held without bail prior to being taken to Eastlake Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A “community member” alerted campus security that a student on campus was possibly in possession of a firearm, officials said.
“School security immediately notified the school resource deputy assigned to Antelope Valley High School and after conducting an investigation, the…deputy found a 15-year-old male student in possession of a handgun,” said Ali Villalobos, public information officer with the sheriff’s Lancaster Station.
The boy was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm on school grounds, Villalobos said.
“At this time, there is no indication the student had any plans to harm himself or any other student,” she said.
Villalobos said parents must stress to students that bringing a weapon to school is against the law and a violation of school policy and will result in serious consequences.
