Loyola Marymount University on Sept. 28-29 will host its 7th annual film festival called “Justice on Trial”at the Westchester campus at 1 Loyola Marymount University Drive.

The “Justice on Trial” film festival will be hosted by “A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project” founder Susan Burton, and civil rights activist and author Michelle Alexander, who both started the film festival out of a conversation. The yearly goals of the film  festival are to educate the community and enlighten them about injustice happening in U.S. jails, as well as to screen “ justice-themed” films.

This event speaks to the heartaches and obstacles encountered by people who have been caught up in the justice system. Since they’ve been on the inside, they know too well the jail world on firsthand experiences with solitary confinement,  the stop-and-frisk tactics, fights and beatings, the discerning prosecutions with bad plea bargains, and the unreasonably long sentences that they suffer. Another familiar and almost regular aspect is the school-to-prison pipeline that puts so many young people, particularly those of color, at risk. However, oftentimes their cries for help are left unheard within their own communities.

“Justice on Trial” creates a new opportunity to expose their unheard voices to a world influenced by stereotypes and negative images presented by the media.

“A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project” invites businesses and community members, and encourages them to become sponsors. To become a sponsor would be an immense help to expose injustice and explore possible ways to stop mass incarceration.
