The Palmdale City Library’s Classics Book Club will discuss Henry James’ classic novel “The Portrait of a Lady” on Monday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. at the library, located at 700 E. Palmdale Blvd.

Originally published in 1881 and regarded as one of James’ best works, “The Portrait of a Lady” tells the story of Isabel Archer, a young American woman who accompanies her aunt to England following the death of her father. Intelligent and fiercely independent, Isabel at first refuses to marry, turning down the proposals of two different gentlemen.

After her uncle dies and leaves her a large inheritance, Isabel is tricked into marrying a man, who unknown to her, is her friend’s lover, and must decide whether to honor her vows or retake her independence.

The Classics Book Club meets on the fourth Monday of every month from 7 to 8 p.m. New members are welcome to attend.

The Palmdale City Library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
