Actor and jazz connoisseur Don Cheadle, co-founder and vice-chair of The Nonensemble, will host  a concert in celebration of Africa’s National Women’s Day on Aug. 11 at Ford Theatre.

Nonensemble is a Los Angeles-based organization formed to celebrate and commemorate the rich legacy of jazz. Cheadle received critical acclaim for his role as legendary jazz icon, Miles Davis in 2015’s “Miles Ahead.”

The South African public holiday is celebrated annually on Aug. 9 and honors the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country’s law that required Black South Africans to carry an internal passport during apartheid.

The event will feature two of South Africa’s top women in jazz, Siya Makuzeni, a world-renowned trombonist and vocalist, and Thandi Ntuli, a multi-talented keyboardist and singer-songwriter. They will also be joined by L.A. talents, Joy Jones, singer and songwriter, as well as Georgia Anne Muldrow, who will perform music from an ongoing underground project with Thandi and The Katalyst Collective.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now online and at the Ford Theaters Box Office with limited VIP tickets available. Ticket prices start at $35; reserved seating. Tickets are available at FordTheatres.org or by calling (323) 461-3673.
