The Palmdale City Library’s Classics Book Club will discuss the novel “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” by John Fowles, Monday, May 20, at 7 p.m., at the library, 700 E. Palmdale Blvd.
Written in 1969, the novel is set in the mid-19th century and tells the story of Sarah Woodruff, a woman who fell in love with and was then abandoned by a French lieutenant. While living in disgrace in the coastal town of Lyme Regis, Sarah meets Charles Smithson, an orphaned gentleman engaged to the daughter of a wealthy tradesman, who falls in love with her while listening to her story.
The novel was transformed into a popular 1981 motion picture starring Meryl Streep.
The Classics Book Club typically meets on the fourth Monday of every month from 7 to 8 pm but will meet on the third Monday in May due to the Memorial Day holiday. New members are welcome to attend.
The Palmdale City Library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
