Mom crashes car; daughter is critical

An investigation was underway this week into a suspected DUI crash in which a woman who had just picked up her two daughters from school crashed her car into a light pole, leaving her younger child hospitalized in critical condition, the sheriff’s department reported.

The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of East Avenue I. Gifford C. Cole Middle School is located at 3126 E. Avenue I.

The 31-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition and may face a charge of driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Her name was being withheld, and she had not been arrested as of late this morning.

“Preliminary information gathered at the scene indicates the driver … had just picked up her two children from school,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “She then sped through the parking lot at a high rate of speed and collided with a light pole.”

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Her 6-year-old daughter was hospitalized in critical condition, and her 12-year-old daughter was treated for injuries described as not life-threatening.
