Trailblazing New York Supreme Court Judge William Thompson passes

Several news sources are reporting the passing of former politician and New York Supreme Court Judge William Thompson. He was 94. Thompson was a member of the state Senate from 1965 until 1968 and also a member of the New York City Council. He was also Brooklyn’s first African American state Senator and served as a n associate justice in the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court.

A native of Harlem Thompson swore in his own son as State Comptroller in 2002. “As a judge and the first African American state senator from Brooklyn, William C. Thompson Sr. stood up against racism and injustice in our city for decades,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We send our deepest condolences to his son Bill, his daughter Gail and all his family and loved ones.” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo shared the sentiment.
