American Legion Sammy Davis Jr. Post 784 in Inglewood has installed its first female commander, Star Manning, a United States Marine Corps veteran. The ceremony was held at the American Legion Community Post 46, 5309 Sepulveda Blvd., in Culver City.
“I’ve waited for this opportunity all my life,” Manning said in a recent interview with CBS KCAL . “Now it’s time to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”
The Inglewood post is reportedly facing challenges. It has no physical home and has struggled to stay open, with low recruitment and budget. Manning, a Crenshaw High graduate, was introduced to the United States armed forces via her ROTC class. She later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduation on the advice of retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Paul J. Madison.
Manning served in Operation’s Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. During her active duty service she received several medals, accommodations and earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Manning also holds the title of Ms. Armed Forces All-American where she uses her platform to be a strong advocate for veteran’s voices, and build connections with Millennial veterans. She now works at the L.A. Rams/Chargers stadium project and assist veterans to obtain employment on her spare time.
“This American Legion post supported me as a high school student,” Manning said. “I can’t turn my back now that it needs me.”
