Mary Zolkowski, a white woman from Bay City, Michigan, is paying for her lies to police when she claimed a Black man sexually assaulted her. She’s been sentenced to 45 days in jail. According to BlackNews.com, on March 27, the 21-year old pleaded guilty to one count of false report of a felony after lying about being raped by an unidentified man who she said was Black, denoting a racial stereotype. “I called Delta College and falsely reported the rape on their campus,” Zolkowski told Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph K. Sheeran. “My mother made the initial call and I took the phone and continued to report.” Last Monday, Sheeran ordered that Zolkowski be imprisoned for 45 days with no credit for any time served and be on probation for two years thereafter, only a fraction of the maximum punishment of up to four years imprisonment and a $2,000 fine. Sheeran also deferred an additional 220 days in jail and Zolkowski will only have to serve that if she violates probation wherein she will undergo drug tests and substance abuse counseling. Her defense attorney claimed that she is bipolar and is suffering from PTSD. Last February 2017, Zolkowski reported to the police that a man grabbed her from behind at a parking lot of Delta College in the southwest area of Bay City, Michigan. According to the police report, “she said he grabbed her face and throat and proceeded to rape her, without wearing a condom.” When asked about the identity of the supposed rapist, she only said he was a Black man, noting that she only saw his hands. Police continued the investigations even though Zolkowski showed no interest to participate. At some point, she even said that she dropped classes due to the incident but police found out that she did so even before February 22. The authorities eventually became more suspicious when she started changing her story. She claimed she was raped earlier that day by someone she knew. Police interviewed the man and admitted they had sexual intercourse but it was consensual. The man provided the police with the text messages where she claimed she was raped by a stranger at a Wal-Mart. Another message from Zolkowski told the man not to participate in the investigation.
