Grocer in Maine refuses service to Black man after he questioned manager’s motive

A grocery chain in Maine is wiping egg off of its face after kicking a Black man out of one of its stores. The store has apologized to the man who was told not to return after he questioned whether or not he and his wife were being treated fairly because they were Black, reports BangorDailyNews.com. Rory Ferreira told the Portland Press Herald that he asked to speak to a manager at a Shaw’s store in Saco, Maine, after a clerk told him that he and his wife needed to present ID to buy alcohol. They were purchased a bottle of Sake, which is a Japanese wine. He told the manager he wanted to be sure he was treated the same as everyone else. He says the manager then refused to finish selling him the groceries and had police give him a no-trespass order. Ferreira says he met with company executives, who apologized. The company released a statement saying that it is investigating the situation. Ferreira told local news outlets that he will probably pursue legal action.
