A man was taken into custody this week and charged with one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in the shooting of his 29-year-old wife in Lake Los Angeles.

Michael Daniel Mayberry, 36, reportedly shot his wife, Sandy Mayberry, at about 3:10 p.m. Feb. 25 in the 15600 block of Newmont Avenue. Deputies found the woman on the ground in front of the residence with at least one gunshot wound.

“Attempts to save her life were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead by responding fire department personnel,’’ said Deputy Wally Bracks of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Mayberry was initially booked on suspicion of murder, and was being held on $2 million bail pending arraignment March 19 at the Lancaster courthouse, said Deputy Kimberly Alexander, also of SIB. The murder charge includes an allegation of using a firearm—a handgun—causing great bodily injury or death.

The weapon believed used in the homicide was recovered at the scene, Bracks said.
