The city of Santa Clarita, in partnership with
Los Angeles County 5th District Supervisor
Kathryn Barger, the William S. Hart Union High
School District, and the Los Angeles Conservation
Corps (LACC), celebrated the growth and continued
success of the school district’s recycling program
at a recent media event at Valencia High
School.
The event, which also featured student leaders
from recycling clubs at Valencia High School, followed
the recent acquisition of 260 blue recycling
containers and 14 steel 2-yard locking bins that
were purchased for the district through the use of
CalRecycle grant funds received by the City and
County.
To encourage more recycling within the school
district, City and district staff began collaborating
in 2012 on a beverage container recycling program
that would benefit each of the district’s 16 junior
high and high school campuses. LACC joined as a
program partner, collecting recyclable containers
from each school every other week.
After processing and receiving the California
Redemption Value (CRV) from the containers,
LACC distributes quarterly checks back to each
school. The funds raised are used for additional
recycling programs or projects for students. Due to
the success of the program over the last few years,
the City decided to purchase more containers for
the schools, which are expected to rejuvenate and
grow the program.
