With the Christmas shopping season in full swing, Lancaster Sheriff’s station personnel are out in full force providing an extra level of security for shoppers. Sheriff deputies have been assigned to special holiday patrol units to police Lancaster businesses and shopping centers from Nov. 24 to Dec. 26. The Holiday Patrol targets high volume shopping areas; taking a proactive high-profile approach to reducing crime, while also enforcing traffic and parking laws.

“The Christmas season is a joyous time of the year. Unfortunately, this is also a time when our residents and local businesses are at a higher risk of being targeted by criminals looking to capitalize on opportunities associated with the celebration of the holidays,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “The Lancaster Sheriff’s station recognizes these vulnerabilities and is taking the necessary steps to protect our community and prevent potential dangers.”

The Lancaster Public Safety Department and the Lancaster sheriff’s station have developed various methods to enhance awareness of these issues; hosting a number of holiday safety presentations and events, as well as organizing additional patrol efforts throughout the city.

“These patrols are organized to effectively circumvent historically problematic areas,” said Lee D’Errico, Lancaster Public Safety director. “Alongside the Sheriff’s station, we have analyzed criminal activity patterns during previous holiday seasons to structure more effective patrolling patterns. The Holiday Patrol is very effective at stopping some of the routine crimes we typically see during this season.”

“It’s important for residents and visitors to take in all our community has to offer during the Christmas season. The City and the Lancaster Sheriff’s station are making sure that the shopping experience for all residents is safe and enjoyable,” added Lancaster Vice Mayor Marvin Christ.
