The construction of Banc of California Stadium in South Los Angeles, the new home for the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), has led to hundreds of new jobs for African American and Latino workers.
Construction is underway for the new 22,000-seat stadium at Exposition Park, the site of the former Los Angeles Sports Arena. Prior to groundbreaking, LAFC committed to providing local, living wage jobs for members of the community, and the club has made good on that promise.
The club is using a Project Labor Agreement with specific local hiring and wage standards, and has provided hundreds of jobs from low-income, local and minority communities. Since August, the project has created more than 950 new jobs for African American and Latino workers. In all, more than 73 percent of all workers hired on the project have been Latino or African American.
In addition, the project is using several minority-owned businesses as subcontractors, with nearly 40 percent of all subcontracted work being done by Latinos, African Americans, small business, disadvantaged businesses, disabled veterans or women.
More than 40 percent of those hired live within ten miles of the stadium site or from low-income neighborhoods in the greater Los Angeles area.
“From the beginning, we have set out to build a club that reflects this community,” said club president and owner Tom Penn. “That includes every facet of our operations, from the construction of our stadium to the players on the pitch.”
