A Black man in Manhattan, Kansas, admitted that be wrote racist graffiti on his own car as part of a Halloween prank that took a bad turn. Social media posted photos of the car covered with words such as “Date your own kind” and “Die.” The car with the graffiti was parked in an apartment complex close to Kansas State University, reports the New York Post. The incident fueled racial tensions and an emergency meeting was called of the Black Student Union that drew community leaders and school administrators. KSU stepped up patrols as well. Within five days, however, the area’s police department put out a news release that the owner of the car, 21-year-old Dautarious Williams, told investigators that he was responsible. Police added that they decided not to charge Williams with a crime as he was “genuine remorseful and expressed sincere regret.” Added Brad Schoen of the Riley County PD: “While Williams’ mistake had a decidedly negative impact on the community, please recognize that he, like many of us when we were young, is a young man who made a mistake and is now doing his best to own up to it.”
