Kindergartners through adults in South Los Angeles can participate in the Helping Individuals Through Science (H.I.P.) science fair Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bradley Milken Center, 1773. E. Century Blvd. in Watts.

H.I.P. is a free afterschool STEM program, operated by The People of Change organization and is designed to increase interest in science in urban and underserved communities.

Interested individuals can submit an entry in one of four grade-appropriate categories; the deadline is Sept. 1. There is no cost to participate.

People can participate in the kindergarten-third grade division, grades 4-6, 7-12th grades and adult. Entries in all categories except K-3 must be accompanied by a 200-word summary of the experiment. The summary must describe the research conducted by the students and must state the problem and hypothesis. Each student display should also have a tri-fold or poster board paper describing the project.

Points will be awarded for community involvement, creativity, skill, thoroughness, clarity and dramatic value. Students will also receive additional points, if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The entry can consist of one student or a team. Winners will receive medals, ribbons and certificates for first, second and third place. Disney tickets and science experiment kits will also be given away.

H.I.P. partners with a variety of organizations to offer free ongoing STEM programs. They include: Imperial Courts Recreation Center, 2250 E. 114th St., Los Angeles, Mondays 4-5:30 p.m., Nickerson Gardens Boys and Girls club, 11251 Compton Ave., Los Angeles, Wednesdays 4-5:30 p.m.; Girls Club of Los Angeles, 2057 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, Tuesdays 2-3:30 p.m.; Helen Keller Park, 1045 W. 126th St., Los Angeles, Thursdays 3-4 p.m., Bradley Milken Center, 1773 E. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, Fridays 4-5 p.m.

Additionally, H.I.P. offers three other programs including cultural mentoring, homeless awareness and economic development which teaches adults business skills. Participants in this segment are in the process of developing businesses that include an entertainment complex (videogame arcade) and a soul food restaurant.
