Sand available for El Nino

The city of Lancaster has announced six locations throughout the community which will allow the public to gather sand to fill sandbags for the upcoming El Nino storms.

All fire stations in the Antelope Valley can provide up to 25 unfilled sandbags per request. Individuals who have their own bags must  bring appropriate tools, specifically a shovel. Officials suggest persons avoid overfilling the bags, leaving enough room to allow for the bags to be easily tied off and stacked for maximum efficiency. Overfilling the bags can cause them to tear and not stack properly, thereby compromising the strength of the sandbag barriers and allowing water to soak through.

You can obtain sand at the following locations:

—In central Lancaster, the northwest corner of Avenue L-8 and 6th Street West, and at 615 W. Avenue H (the city of Lancaster Maintenance Yard parking lot);

—In east Lancaster, 43000 N. 30th Street East (soccer center at the northeast corner, access off 35th Street), and at 44910 27th Street East (Tierra Bonita Park parking lot);

—In west Lancaster, 32nd Street West and Avenue M (west of the drainage basin), and at 44558 N. 40th Street West (40th Street and Newgrove Avenue, just north of the fire station).
