The Los Angeles Chapter of Jack and Jill of America is participating with the LAPD and Black Lives Matter organizer, Melina Abdullah, to present an educational forum for teens in the Black community Oct. 25, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at Frank D. Parent School, 5354 W. 64th St., Ingelwood.
The program begins at 12:30 p.m. with registration and a free lunch followed by a keynote address by Abdullah. Then the youth will be divided into two breakout sessions that begin at 3 p.m. and conclude at 4:45 p.m. Participants will be divided by age into groups consisting of grades four to eight and grade nine to age 25.
The event will feature DJ Young 1, and is designed to educate teens and young adults on topics ranging from police interaction, bullying, social media predators and more. Cheryl Grills, Ph.D., former president of the National Association of Black Psychologists and a commentator in the documentary “Dark Girls,” will also address participants.
“Nurturing our children through civic duty and leadership development is part of our organization’s mission,” says Jack and Jill L.A. Chapter President, Cheronda Guyton.
Guyton adds, “The goal of our event is to inform our African American youth of serious community issues so they can make a positive change in their lives and their communities. We want our youth to understand that they have the power to make a difference.”
Abdullah, who is also a professor of Pan-African studies at Cal State University Los Angeles, will serve as the keynote speaker and will be joined by DJ Young 1, of radio station 92.3FM who will provide entertainment for the day.
