A Rosamond woman has been taken into custody in connection with the July 17 death of her 81-year-old mother. Police said the deceased woman suffered from severe neglect.

Shelly Ann Freeman, 46, was arrested on suspicion of murder and felony elder abuse, according to Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Freeman is being held without bond.

The investigation began last weekend when Rosamond deputies were dispatched to Antelope Valley Hospital at the request of Adult Protective Services for a report of elder abuse.

“Deputies arrived and found an 81-year-old female suffering from severe neglect,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release. “Homicide detectives were notified and [began] the investigation.”

Authorities proceeded to secure and serve a search warrant at a home in the 2300 block of Panorama Lane in Rosamond and found, per the sheriff’s press release, “evidence of elder abuse, including unsanitary conditions and severe neglect.”

Freeman was interviewed by detectives and then arrested in connection with her mother’s death. She was scheduled to appear in court this week.
