Four distinctive contemporary dance companies, including Lula Washington Dance, will give L.A. arts lovers another way to enjoy movement, when the program “Moves After Dark,” comes to the Los Angeles Music Center July 13, 14, 20 and 21.

Each night beginning at 8:30 p.m., the companies will perform a site-specific work, where the audience travels to the venue and a chooses location around the Music Center campus from which to view the show.

Each company will perform a 15-to-20 minute set of dance movements during the two-hour program and viewers follow three different paths to enjoy the shows.

Washington’s company, founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington, will perform “Message for My Peeps: The Message, Installation #5” choreographed by company associate director Tamica Washington-Miller. The piece was created in 2008 when the harsh realities of the economic downturn impacted the choreographer personally. Throw in the grittiness of the Occupy Movement, and the piece has continued to evolve through a collection of solo and group works. “Each installation has been my way of finding answers and uderstandings—‘Offerings, Silence, The Women, The Grey Areas, Steadfast and the Message,’” says Washington-Miller.

Tickets are $25 each and include one drink voucher. The “Moves After Dark” experience involves walking and standing, so wearing comfortable shoes and clothing is advised.

For information, contact the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Box office at 135 N. Grand Ave. or call (213) 972-8555.
