The polls will open May 19 at 8 a.m., and locally voters will determine who will represent people on the Los Angeles Unified school board in seat number 7.

The competing candidates include incumbent Richard Vladovich facing challenger Lydia A. Gutiérrez. Both are South Bay candidates hailing from San Pedro.

The district stretches south from Vernon to San Pedro but the school district is in the process of approving new boundaries, which are expected to become effective July 1.

Vladovic is a lifelong educator, whose background includes teaching at the middle school and high school levels including at Locke High and serving as a superintendent of schools in the West Covina Unified School District.

As a member of school board since 2007, Vladovich is trying to win his final term before facing term limits.

Gutiérrez, who grew up in San Pedro and teaches in Long Beach schools, has previously run for the state superintendent of schools before trying to unseat Vladovich.

Her educational background includes being credentialed in bilingual education and serving as a math teacher in various higher education projects.

Voters who choose to Vote By Mail ballot must do so early enough to ensure that it arrives in the Election Division office no later than by the close of polls (8 p.m.) on election day. However, in accordance with new state and city legislation adopted, the City Clerk will accept VBM ballots that are signed and postmarked by election day and received within three days of the election.

Voters who cannot mail their VBM ballots in time may drop off their ballot at any polling place or at the Election Division office by the close of polls on election day.
