House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-23rd) announced on Wednesday the recipients of his district’s 2015 Merit Awards for students in the East Kern and Antelope Valley communities.

The winners are Stephanie De La Melena of Lancaster High, Darlene Mendoza of Desert Christian High, Melody Mendez of Quartz Hills High, Austin Leonardo of Rosamond High, Monica Gonzalez of Mojave High, Erica Tyson of Desert High, Ellyse Adamczyk of California City High, Joelle Steichen of Sherman E. Burroughs High and Keith Core of Boron High.

A number of local educators, selected by each student, will also be honored at the presentation ceremony set for May 5 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Union High School District office (board room), 44811 North Sierra Highway, Lancaster.

“The Merit Award recognizes those that have strived and excelled within our education system and our communities,” McCarthy said in a statement released Wednesday. “It not only embodies superior academic achievement, it recognizes positive values students and educators espouse everyday. This presentation ceremony provides our community the opportunity to honor this year’s recipients (who) demonstrate this excellence and inspire the continued advancement of community endeavors and academic success.”
