Agency offers residents lawn mower exchange

Southland residents can now register to save up to 70 percent on a new electric lawn mower through the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) Lawn Mower Exchange Program.

Participants can register to purchase one of the more energy efficient electric lawn mowers. According to the SCAQMD, some of the older gas models spew more pollution into the air in a single year than a car driven more than 22,000 miles.

Now in its 13th year, the program helps the wallet and air quality by accepting residents’ used, highly polluting gas-powered lawn mowers as a trade-in for environmentally friendly, cordless battery-powered electric models.

This year’s program offers 4,000 mowers for trade-in at one of six events being held this year in Anaheim, Arcadia, Riverside, Long Beach, Ontario and Van Nuys.

“By participating in the Lawn Mower Exchange Program, residents will get a brand new mower that is easier to operate and quieter than a gas model for just a fraction of the retail price,” said William A. Burke, Ed.D., chair of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. “In addition to taking advantage of this great offer, residents will also help improve air quality in their community by eliminating air pollution from gas mowers.”

Residents can register and choose from one of six Black+Decker and Greenstation battery-electric models ranging from $100 to $250:

—Black+Decker 18” 36-volt, $100 (retail: $350)

—Black+Decker 19” 36-volt, $180 (retail: $400)

—Black+Decker 20” with two 40-volt lithium batteries, $250 (retail: $450)

—Greenstation 20” 24-volt, $160 (retail: $430)

—Greenstation 19” 24-volt self-propelled, $250 (retail: $470)

—Greenstation 18” 36-volt, $100 (retail: $365) – up to 70 percent savings!

To take advantage of this offer, residents must pre-register at www.aqmd.gov/lawnmower or call (888) 425-6247. Registration is underway and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Exchanging a mower is a 10- to 15-minute process, and participants do not have to leave their cars. Upon arrival, workers will remove the old gas mower from the vehicle and drain it of hazardous fluids prior to its destruction at a metal recycling facility. After payment is made, attendants will place the new, boxed mower in the customer’s vehicle. To view a video on the exchange process, visit www.aqmd.gov/lawnmower.

Residents must be at least 18 years old to participate in the program. Gas-powered mowers must be in working order and only one mower per household can be exchanged. Cash, check or major credit cards are accepted for payment of the new mower.

Exchange events will take place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon as follows: May 9 in Long Beach, May 23 in Anaheim, May 30 in Riverside, June 6 in Van Nuys,, June 13 in Ontario and June 20 in Arcadia.

SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
