There are still plots available for interested persons or groups who would like to to become “plot holders” this spring at the City of Palmdale Community Garden located at the Yucca Neighborhood House, 503 E. Ave. Q-3.
“As we are getting ready to re-open our community garden at the Yucca house, we are seeking resident involvement by asking for our neighbors to become plot holders for the 2015 growing season,” said Palmdale Housing Coordinator Terri-Lei Wheeler. “It’s absolutely free to use the plots; the only cost is your time and labor in planting and tending to your plants.”
The Yucca Community Garden will include a student/children’s section, a disabled accessibility section, garden shed, greenhouse, compost bin, pergola with bench and a red windmill.
“The benefits of community gardening are many,” Wheeler said. “Community gardeners can develop positive relationships with neighbors, beautify the neighborhood, and of course, grow nutritious food. You can even donate any extra food to a local charity such as SAVES or a food bank.”
All levels of gardening experience are welcome. The first planting is scheduled to begin early spring 2015. An informational meeting will be held at the Yucca Neighborhood House tomorrow at 9 a.m. Interested gardeners are encouraged to attend.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to grow fresh, healthy, and delicious produce with their own hands, save money, eat better and improve our community,” Wheeler added.
