The Baldwin Hills community was able to witness concert spirituals at its finest, as the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers of Los Angeles filled the St. Bernadette Church with harmonies from African American composers of concert music, opera, and theatre music with the production “Bridges.”

“Bridges” is a dramatization in song and narration that chronicles the events leading up to the march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to protest segregation and support voter registration.

“Bridges” commemorates and honors the struggles, sacrifices, brutality, and even death suffered by the brave men, women, and children who marched with King.

The Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers were joined by noted musicians, such as David Sharp, motivational speaker and dancer, as well as baritone Bradley Baker, from Crystal Cathedral’s “Glory of Christmas” productions; members from the Jubilee Singers Reunion Choir, Byron J. Smith’s Spirit Chorale, and Perry V. Hayes’ United Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles.

McNeil, 98, is a native of Los Angeles, earned bachelor and master degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles, and did his doctoral studies at the University of Southern California.  He taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 17 years beginning at the elementary level and ended his tenure in the district at the Susan Miller Dorsey High School.
