Leaf collection in Lancaster

The high winds that blew through the southland this week have resulted in Lancaster officials requesting that residents try to rake and trash as many fallen leaves as possible. Street sweepers, apparently, are often unable to complete their rounds because of the large volume of fallen leaves around the city, particularly in residential neighborhoods..

City officials are asking all residents to avoid sweeping leaves into the street; and have alternatively, asked citizens to bag their fallen leaves as well as utilize their residential service carts for regularly scheduled weekly pickup.

Lancaster Waste Management says that, during mid-winter, they will collect bagged leaves for free during a 90-day period which began on Dec. 1, 2014. The Leaf Collection Program provides residents with the option of bagging leaves separately from their waste service carts. Bagged leaves should be placed with other yard waste and set out on the same day as all other residential waste service containers (trash, recycling and green waste) on top of the curb for weekly pickup.

The benefits of the Fall Leaf Collection Program reportedly included a significant increase in the city of Lancaster’s green waste diversion efforts, as well as a considerable increase in disposal capacity for residents who take the time to clean up and start each week with a leaf-free yard.
