First Young Athletes festival introduces kids to sports skills

LAUSD Young Athletes is a partnership between Special Olympics Southern California and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Young Athletes is intended to introduce students 2 to 7 years to sports skills and activities that foster physical, cognitive and social development of children with and without mental impairment. This program provides opportunities to learn through sports competition; to develop all aspects of total fitness needed to compete in any sport; and to promote the development of life skills that help student-athletes lead a more productive and independent life. The program culminates with a festival on Friday.

Memebers of the Los Angeles Dodgers will assist the adapted physical education and classroom teachers with activities on Friday, from 10-11 a.m. at the South East High School Gymnasium, 2720 Tweedy Blvd., South Gate. Twelve early education centers and elementary schools also will be participating in the festival:

Parking is available in the visitor lot located on Tweedy Boulevard in front of South East High School, and in the lot located behind the football field on Wisconsin Street. All visitors must sign in before entering the campus (The visitor entrance off Wisconsin Street will be closed after 9:30 a.m.).
