House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy this week nominated two local students to the United States Service Academies. Anna Leland, 18, a student at Lancaster’s Desert Christian High School, and Rosamond’s Gabrielle Evey, 17, who attends Desert Junior/Senior High in Edwards, were selected among the applicants.

Leland is a two-sport athlete in track and field and cross country where she serves as team manager. She is vice president for the California Scholarship Federation and serves as president of the National Honor Society at her school. Also, Leland has participated in drama class for each of her four high school years. She was the director for the school’s drama productions for the past three years, and maintains a 4.25 GPA. Leland plans to major in mechanical engineering while attending the academy.

Evey is also a track and field star and serves as the Varsity Mathletes Captain and Wing Commander of the Air Force Junior ROTC at her school. She holds the rank of Cadet Colonel and commands more than 130 cadets. Evey is pursuing her pilot’s liscense and expects to major in mechanical engineering at the academy in hopes of being selected to the pilot training  program upon graduation.

McCarthy designated one principal nominee for each academy that will fill one of five slots afforded to him as a member of congress at each academy. He also nominated a group of competing alternative nominations for each academy that will be ranked according to their competitiveness by the academy admissions board and selected for admission at the academy’s discretion.

Some applicants received a nomination to more than one academy according to the rank preference listed on their applications. The reviewing team selects the academy the students will be admitted to (United States Naval Academy at Anapolis, MD; United State Military Academy at West Point, Army; United States Air Force Academy; the United States Merchant Marine Academy; and the United States Coast Guard Academy. The academies traditionally notify the alternates by April whether or not they will be offered an appointment.

“I am proud to nominate students from my district who display the core values of honor and courage in their commitment to serve our country,” McCarthy said. “I congratulate each of them in their pursuit of becoming future leaders of our armed services.”
