School is out and selected students at local public campuses have an opportunity to attend summer session.

In the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), high school students who need to makeup credits can attend one of 76 campuses from June 16-July 18. Eligible pupils will have the opportunity to take two classes per day beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. with a half-hour break between courses when meals will be served.

A special four-week 2014 CORE Waiver Extended Learning Opportunity Summer Program will be available at select schools for youth in elementary and middle school who need intervention. Thirty-eight middle schools and 112 elementary campuses will be open to provide this academic help. Parents should have already received information about the summer session, if their child is enrolled in a CORE school. Parents who feel their youngster needs intervention, but did not receive an invitation can contact the principal to discuss the situation.

CORE schools are those campuses granted a waiver releasing them from some of the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. This program is designed to help children meet grade-level standards in mathematics and/or English language arts.

The program will be held June 16-July 11 from 8:30-11:50 a.m. Student enrollment is based on eligibility, priority, and available space.

In addition to credit recovery courses, LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell will host a free Summer Enrichment Program at 200 schools during the 2014 summer vacation period. Participation will be limited to students who attend a Los Angeles Unified school, and although the operation times for each site vary, the general hours are between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Parents must enroll their child at the site, however there is a cap at each school. Should that be reached, children can go to other open locations.

The program will provide daily summer camp activities Monday through Friday and these can include dance, music, and art.

Lunch will also be served, and this is open to all youth ages 1 to 18.

Among the schools offering classes are Cochran, Markham, Obama Global Prep, Muir, Virginia Road, and Wadsworth.

In addition to the enrichment offerings, Beyond the Bell will conduct learn-to-swim programs at selected elementary schools. Youngsters will learn water safety and swim techniques.

Portable pools will be available at 32 elementary schools including 24th Street, 52nd Street, 54th Street, 61st Street, 95th Street, 107th Street, Parmelee, and Vermont Ave.

Inglewood Unified

Inglewood Unified School District will offer classes to all elementary and middle school students, space permitting, from July 7-Aug. 1. Priority is offered to students who need to makeup credits or those in special education. Students must attend the school they were enrolled in at the end of the school year.

High school students can attend classes at Inglewood or Morningside July 1-Aug. 4. Priority will be given to those youngsters who need to recover credits in core subjects. Admission is open only to currently enrolled Inglewood students.

Lunch and dinner will be served to middle and high school students, and elementary pupils will be given a mid-day meal.

Compton Unified

Youth in grades kindergarten-5, who are homeless, can attend school June 16-July 17 Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The academic offerings will be augmented by breakfast and lunch.

This program is only available to students who participated in the afterschool program during the academic year and is a continuation of those activities.

Secondary pupils who need to recover credits can attend one of the district’s three comprehensive high schools—Dominguez, Compton and Centennial—and alternative school, Chavez, from June 16-July 24.
