LAUSD to offer summer programs

The Los Angeles Unified School District will offer programming this summer at elementary, middle, and high schools. However, the district’s academic support services will be limited, including summer school courses for students who have failed classes during the academic year. (LAUSD) will provide families with a variety of age-appropriate links to online Internet resources designed to keep youngsters academically and actively engaged during the summer months.

Traditional summer school for high school students (credit recovery)

High School summer school for students needing to recover credits will be available at select high schools for students currently enrolled in district schools. Eligibility for students is based upon numerous factors and families are urged to contact their respective school counselors to determine their best option. Summer school begins June 16 and ends July 18. Eligible students will have the opportunity to take two classes beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. with a half-hour break between classes when meals will be served.

Academic support at select middle and          elementary schools

A special four-week 2014 CORE Waiver Extended Learning Opportunity Summer Program will be available at select schools. This program is designed to help children meet grade-level standards in mathematics or English language arts. The program will be held June 16-July 11 from 8:30 a.m.-11:50 a.m. Student enrollment is based on eligibility, priority, and available space.

Comprehensive summer enrichment programs

The district’s Beyond the Bell Branch will operate Summer Enrichment Programs at more than 200 elementary and middle schools during the 2014 summer vacation period. The programs will provide daily activities Monday through Friday, beginning June 9.  Each program will include three components—academic, enrichment and physical fitness.  For a comprehensive list of school sites participating please go to http://bit.ly/LAUSDSummer.

Online resources

The Beyond the Bell Branch will provide a variety of online resources for students. Websites, instructional materials, and worksheets will be accessible from the Beyond the Bell Branch website. Beginning in June, students and families can access these online resources to reinforce learning, and to provide a variety of projects and activities to keep youngsters engaged during the summer months.

Special education students

The Extended School Year program for grades Pre-K through 12 will be offered this summer for eligible special education students. To be eligible for these summer classes, students must have the Extended School Year marked on their respective Individualized Education Program.

The Extended School Year programs are offered for students in designated single-track, district-operated schools and special education centers from June 16 – July 11.

Eligible students participate in ESY special education classes that provide four-hours of instructional time per day for 20 days. Preschool programs on elementary school sites will provide two hours of instructional time per day for 20 days. School hours will be: 8:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. at elementary sites, and 8 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. at secondary sites and special education centers.
